An independent provider answers to its own revenue: prices move when costs move rather than when a target does, and product lines survive as long as they pay for themselves. It is not a guarantee of anything — independence and stagnation look identical from outside, and a company with no investor also has no cushion. It does mean nobody is planning an exit that a customer will find out about afterwards.
