Altervista is an Italian hosting and blogging platform, running since 2000 and now operated by Mondadori Digital, part of the Mondadori media group. Sites run on WordPress with unlimited storage and traffic at no cost, publishing to a free subdomain of altervista.org; a custom second-level domain, additional email accounts and scheduled backups beyond the automatic pre-update snapshot are sold as separate add-ons.

The platform is built around content publishing and monetization: authors can turn on banner ads or Google AdSense on their own sites, though outside ad networks are not permitted without authorization.

Worth knowing

A site left unused is treated as abandoned: no login for 12 months followed by 30 days after a warning email, or fewer than 100 page views across a month once the site has been open for a month, moves it to an archived, offline state with 30 days to restore it before deletion.
