Managed internet infrastructure sold as a service from 1999, whose hosting went to EDS in 2002 and whose software became Opsware.

The cloud, a decade before the word.

Loudcloud was founded in September 1999 by Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Tim Howes, and In Sik Rhee. It sold servers, storage, networking, and the software on top, run for the customer as a service rather than assembled by them. At its core was Opsware, the company’s own software for provisioning and configuring the servers.

The business ran into the end of the dot-com boom. It went public in March 2001 at $6 a share, and in June 2002 sold the managed services business to EDS for $63.5 million in cash plus a license for the Opsware software. What remained renamed itself Opsware Inc. and sold the automation software on its own. HP bought Opsware in 2007 for $14.25 a share, about $1.6 billion. The same sequence, a hosting company selling the hosting and keeping the software it wrote to run it, recurs at dotCloud eleven years later.
