  • AppFog

    Started as PHP Fog in 2010, the first PaaS aimed at PHP. Bought by CenturyLink in 2013 and shut down on 31 August 2016.

  • cloudControl

    Berlin platform-as-a-service, the first PaaS built in Europe. Insolvent in January 2016 and closed at the end of February.

  • dotCloud

    The platform-as-a-service that Docker grew out of. Sold to cloudControl in 2014 and shut down on 29 February 2016.

  • Gatsby Cloud

    The build and hosting platform for Gatsby sites, from the company that made the framework. Sunset after Netlify bought it in 2023.

  • Glitch

    The place a million small apps were built and run in the browser. App hosting ended on 8 July 2025; the redirects are promised until the end of 2026.

  • Loudcloud

    Managed internet infrastructure sold as a service, in 1999. The hosting business went to EDS in 2002 and the company became the software maker Opsware.

  • Media Temple

    The developer-facing host GoDaddy bought in 2013 to reach web professionals, and retired in 2023.

N

  • Nodejitsu

    The Node.js platform-as-a-service. Acquired by GoDaddy in February 2015, which took the team and left the hosting business.

  • Pagoda Box

    A PaaS built for PHP alone, launched in 2011. Succeeded by Nanobox, which DigitalOcean acquired in 2019 and later retired.
