Media Temple
The developer-facing host GoDaddy bought in 2013 to reach web professionals, and retired in 2023.
Developer host acquired, then retired by GoDaddy.
Media Temple was a Los Angeles host with an unusually strong following among designers and developers, and the brand GoDaddy bought in 2013 explicitly to reach web professionals — the CEO said at the time that it was about winning their hearts and minds.
The brand was retired ten years later. From February 2023 Media Temple accounts became GoDaddy accounts, and the sunsetting was announced that April; customers were moved onto GoDaddy’s own infrastructure. The record stays because what happened to it is the point: an acquisition made to buy a reputation ended by absorbing it.
