# Managed databases

An application platform that runs no database is one invoice short of a working setup, and pricing pages rarely say so plainly. Recorded here are the engines the provider operates and patches — not the ones a customer may install themselves, which is a fact about having a [shell](/shell/) rather than about the host. Engines rather than a yes or no, because "has a database" is not the question anybody actually has: a project needs [PostgreSQL](/databases/postgres/) or it needs [MySQL](/databases/mysql/). Kafka and the two search engines are not databases and are listed anyway, since the question being asked of them is the same one — does the provider run it, or is it something to go and buy elsewhere.
