CaaS sits between a [VPS](/categories/vps/) and a [PaaS](/categories/paas/): the customer supplies a container image and the provider schedules it, runs it and restarts it, without detecting a language or building anything. That makes it the most portable arrangement in the register — the same image runs anywhere — and the one that hands the most back. Everything inside the image is the customer's, security updates included, which is why records here answer [self-managed](/operating-system/self-managed/) even though nobody rents a server: an image is still yours to rebuild. What the provider actually operates is the scheduler and the host underneath it. The deployment method is a [container image](/deployment/docker-image/).
